St. Luke's School Game Report
Saturday, October 2nd At St. Luke's School (1:00 P.M.)
The Hornets came into this game not only looking to bury the memory of last week's frustrating loss to Pennington, but also to avenge last season's 19-7 loss to St. Luke's. The team worked hard preparing for this meeting; a win would put us back over the .500 mark. The game plan was simple: score first, play aggressive defense, score often.
At the start of the game, the Hornet offense quickly obtained its 1st objective. QB Brandon Stoller connected with Andrew Poulin for an 80 yard touchdown pass, staking Hackley to an early 7-0 lead. It immediately became apparent that the Hornet defense also was focused on attaining its objective. Defensive line stunts, mixed with a variety of blitzes confused the St. Luke offense, and pressured their quarterback from the outset. Unable to mount a drive, St. Luke was forced to punt on nearly all of its 1st half possessions. In the 2nd quarter, with an effective ground attack firmly established, the Hornets began chewing up the clock and drove down to St. Luke's 5-yard line. From there, Andrew Poulin carried it in again, putting Hackley up 14-0. The defense continued playing well, and the Hornets entered half-time up by 14.

In
the 3rd quarter, the Hornets got the ball and quickly penetrated deep into St.
Luke territory. Once again, Stoller went airborne, this time hitting
Carter White with a 15-yard scoring pass. The PAT failed, so the Hornets
were up 20-0. With a big lead in hand, and having so much success up to this
point, the Hackley defense might have entered the next series slightly
over-confident. On the flip side, St. Luke's offense was that much more
desperate to get points on the board, and get back into the game in front of its
home crowd. Not to be counted out just yet, St. Luke maneuvered its way
downfield toward the Hackley goal line, and finally punched it in for a score.
They completed the 2-point conversion, and St. Luke's pulled to within 12
points, at 20-8. St. Luke's score reminded the Hornet's that accomplishing
the team's third objective was imperative.
Hackley did not want the outcome of this game going down to the wire, so the
Hornet offense went back to work. As it was able to accomplish so far in the
game, the Hornets again moved the ball effectively on the ground and
occasionally passed, to keep St. Luke's defense honest. This drive
ultimately answered
the St. Luke score when Brandon Stoller hit Alex Scaros with
another touchdown pass for the Hornets, upping the score to 27-8. St.
Luke's scored again to make their offensive output respectable for the afternoon,
but the Hornets again answered when Alex Scaros ran a pitch-out into the
end-zone for a late touchdown to cap the scoring.
Meet the Press
Kenrick Cabey: "We've learned from our mistakes. We are now keeping up the intensity level for all 4 quarters. Our victories can be attributed directly to that."
Nicholas Silverstein: "We have to keep improving as a team. We must eliminate physical and mental mistakes. Our next game is against Division A team "Our Lady of Lourdes," yet it's just like all our other games. Their offensive and defensive lines are bigger than us, but it is just a matter if we are going to step up or not. I'm confident in my teammates, we're up for the challenge."
Junior Varsity Update: Our J.V. is playing well and developing quickly. In Monday's game vs. Rye Country Day, we spotted Rye a 6 point lead, then we dominated the rest of the way, scoring 24 unanswered points. |
