St. Luke's School Game Report
Saturday, September 13th At St. Luke's School (1:00 P.M.)
We were hoping the rain would hold off until after the game, but staying true to form since early this spring, "Mother Nature" refused to cooperate. As the teams took the field, the rain fell. Nevertheless, Hackley came well prepared, and ready to play. The home team scored first to take a 6-0 lead in the opening quarter, but our offense responded to the challenge. The young Hackley offensive line began opening holes for the running backs, as we drove down to the St. Luke's goal line. Our first score of the new season came when the well executed drive, spearheaded by quarterback Brandon Stoller, culminated with a short touchdown run by hard-running senior fullback Kevin Cooper. Place-kicker Alex Scaros booted the extra point through the uprights, and Hackley took a 7-6 lead. It held up until just before the half, when a successful pass play resulted in a St. Luke's touchdown. Once again failing to convert the extra point, the home team went into half-time holding a 12-7 lead.
The deluge not only continued, but came down heavier during the intermission and into the third quarter. As the game progressed, field conditions rapidly deteriorated and effectively neutralized both offenses. The running games were impeded by muddy and slippery ground conditions, and despite the referees' efforts to keep a dry ball in play, passing attempts were more of an adventure than a threat. It became apparent that the next team to score would win; yet neither team was able to mount a sustained drive for the rest of the game. In the end, the home crowd went home happy, as a turnover on downs was converted into a late score, resulting in a 19-7 final.
Despite opening on the road, and in terrible weather conditions, both the offense and defense played well throughout, keeping us in the game until the waning moments. They made a lot of progress since the last scrimmages, and displayed determination and heart. Let's reciprocate by coming out to support our squad this Saturday, Sept. 20 at 1:30 P.M. as they come home to the friendly confines of Hackley's Hilltop Field to host the Brunswick Bruins.
