The first live action of the season is now under our belts
Our Varsity & Junior Varsity teams scrimmaged today against Pleasantville, Dobbs Ferry and Ardsley High Schools at the latter's field. With the departure of last year's many talented seniors, the inexperience of our young varsity team was evident. Yet, I was pleasantly surprised at how well they held their own versus the more experienced teams scrimmaging today. Our varsity kids displayed a gritty determination to succeed both on offense and defense. Despite some mistakes, they were not discouraged, and showed no signs of backing down. There's still a lot of hard work ahead, but these kids feel they can get it done.
The JV team, which has even less high school level football experience than their varsity counterparts, was very impressive. They showed good team speed and displayed some hard hitting on defense, which has been the trademark of Hackley teams over the years. The freshman numbers look very good, and the coaches have some good talent to work with here. This bunch's Hackley football future looks very promising.
Back at Hackley after the conclusion of the scrimmage, as the parents and players mingled and enjoyed a nicely prepared luncheon, I found the coaches were still hard at work in the office, reviewing films of today's action. They were already making adjustments, and tactical plans for improvement. With the first regular season game only two weeks away, preparation time is precious, and these guys are absolutely unwilling to waste a moment.
Another bright spot: other than a couple of mild ankle sprains, I am unaware of any serious injuries resulting from today's action. I sincerely hope that I'm not overlooking anyone in this regard, but no word of any significant injury came my way. Staying healthy always plays an important part in a team's development, and when the numbers are small, an even more important roll in scoreboard success.
Next Scrimmage is Saturday, September 6th, 9:00 A.M. at Hackley Field
