Hackley Hornets vs. Albertus Magnus Falcons (Fri. 9/3/2004) |
This was the first Home Night Game in Hackley history,
and it turned out to be one that will not soon be forgotten by both
those who played and those who observed. This game was dominated by both
defenses from the beginning of the 1st quarter until the end of the 4th.
The Hornets scored midway through the1st half on an option-play pitch-out around the left side from Quarterback Brandon Stoller to Halfback Carter White. The 10 yard scoring play put the Hornets up 6-0. The Point After Touchdown (PAT) attempt failed as the kick sailed wide right of the goal-post. The Hornet defense put up a spectacular effort against the Falcons. The Albertus Magnus offense was shut down all night, and the Falcons would not have scored if not for a one-in-a-million finish. With under a minute left in the 4th quarter, and Hackley leading 6-0, the Hornet defense stopped the Falcons, and it appeared that Hackley had won its 1st home night game. With 11 seconds left in the 4th quarter, and Hackley possessing the ball on 2nd down, it appeared that one more snap of the ball would seal the Hornet victory. Unbelievably, it wasn't to be. A Falcon defensive lineman was able to slap the ball away. The referees ruled the play legal, giving Albertus Magnus possession of the ball, and time for one last play. As time expired, the Falcons scored to tie the game at 6-6. The Falcons failed on their PAT attempt, and the game went into overtime. The disaster continued for the Hornets in overtime. On their possession the Falcons scored, but on ours, the Hornets could not. Our 4th down passing attempt fell incomplete, and the Falcons had won the game, in what is certainly one of the most unbelievable finishes in sports history. |
It's only one game, and we have eight more to go. Not to be deterred, the Hornets, are preparing for their next opponent, the Tappan Zee Dutchmen at Tappan Zee High School. Despite the tough loss, practices have gone well this week, and the Hornets are hungry, and poised to sting the Dutchmen for their well deserved 1st win of the season. |
